If you ever find yourself in a situation where the pharmacie closest to your apartment is closed for the evening (or closed because it's Sunday) they will often post on their front door the address of the designated Pharmacie de Garde, or the pharmacy in the surrounding area that's open for extended hours. The pharmacies in each neighborhood all take turns each week or month to stay open during nights and Sundays.
This pharmacy, conveniently located near the Hotel de Ville and the BHV department store, will let you do all your necessary French beauty product shopping before, during or after your stroll through the Marais.
I ended up buying most of my products at the Pharmacie de la place de la République. It was never overly crowded, was open 24/7, and the staff spoke excellent English and were extremely helpful. I had a lot of questions about some of my buys and relied on their expertise and knowledge of the different lines of products.
For that, and many other items I could normally find in an American grocery, it required a trip to the pharmacy! Very quickly realized how cool the pharmacies were in France. I highly recommend that on your next trip to France you check one out.
There is practically one every block in Paris. Some are quite old with beautiful facades, some more modern, and others just simply utilitarian, serving the purpose it was created for. No matter which pharmacy you visit in Paris (or France) I wanted to share some of the items you might think about picking up and a few items I would discourage you from buying.
But I think every trip to Paris should include a pit stop at a local pharmacy to stock up on a wide variety of skincare must-haves. For this post, my gal-pal in Paris, Mitalee, did some intensive research that involved many beauty discussions with Parisians and expats alike over lots of glasses of wine. And she has rounded 9 of the best French skincare products that you can easily get at the pharmacy around the corner or even order online from the comfort of your home.
Sunscreen is probably the most important and the most underrated skincare must-have on this list. Wearing sunscreen is one of the easiest ways to protect your skin from harmful rays and ensuring its healthy appearance all year round. La Roche-Posay is an award-winning French pharmacy brand that was established in 1975 and consistently works with dermatologists to create effective formulations with active ingredients.
Micellar water is a staple product in a makeup toolkit. It is a quintessential pharmacy product found all over France, and you can rarely go wrong with it. It draws out impurities and leaves the skin refreshed and clean. The soft formula in Bioderma Sensibio H20 works wonders on all skin types and is an excellent makeup remover for heavy and long-wear makeup. It also works well on waterproof makeup without irritation or deep rubbing.
French pharmacies come equipped with moisturizers for all skin types. Embryolisse is one of the most iconic and popular moisturizers on the pharmacy shelves. Created by a Parisian dermatologist in the 1950s, this moisturizer has been used by makeup artists all over the world for its hydration without any irritation.
If you want to embrace your inner French girl, then trying some of these wonderful French skincare products that you can get at any French pharmacy is a good start. The French trust their local pharmacist as if they were an old family friend and French skincare brands have a tradition of medicinal products utilizing ingredients found in nature. I encourage you to step inside a pharmacy the next time you visit Paris!
The French have a decidedly studied approach to skincare and beauty, and a trip to the Paris pharmacy offers a wealth of affordable, good value, time-tested lotions and potions like multi-purpose Homeoplasmine ointment, non-irritating make-up remover Bioderma Sensibio H2O, moisturizing Embryolisse face cream, life-changing Khlorane dry shampoo and other celebrated French beauty and skincare products.
Many cult French pharmacy brands are now available online in the U.S., usually at a considerable mark-up (a tube of Homeoplasmine, for example, will run you a couple of euros at the Paris pharmacy; buying it on Amazon can cost upwards of $30).
Those who love unscented body lotions and creams will find many great choices at the pharmacy. For flaky skin, Biotherm Anti-Drying Body Milk and La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP Lipid Replenishing Body Balm are perfect, and Avène likewise has several excellent options.
Every time I visit the pharmacy I walk away with another package of Roger & Gallet soaps. Who can resist the beautiful packaging and impressive collection of scents: rose, linden flower, honey and almond, orange blossom, and verbena The bars are triple milled and hold their shape well. The scent is rich enough to perfume not only your skin, but also your bathroom. I use sandalwood soap to scent my sweater and linen drawers.
This area of the Latin Quarter has plenty to recommend itself: the low-key, relaxed atmosphere, serene Jardin des Plantes, Rue Mouffetard Market sprawling on the oldest street in Paris, and much more. Great selection and friendly, helpful staff are the reasons to check out this wonderful pharmacy.
Victoria: Ah, yes, the samples are the best part. I bought a small tube of hand cream, and I received 5 samples of other products. Of course, it depends on a pharmacy and its pharmacist. Some are more generous than others.
Victoria: When my mom travels to Ukraine, she also find interesting pharmacy products. One of our favorites is a rose-apple body butter made by a Crimean company. It smells exactly like fresh tea roses. February 28, 2013 at 11:08am Reply
The pharmacy concept is similar in Estonia, although the choice is not as plentiful. Still, several of the French brands are available, as are Eucerin (absolutely excellent value for money), Weleda, Dr Hauschka and others. February 28, 2013 at 10:58am Reply

Wow!!!! I am drooling. I so want to visit Paris just for a haul If I go to Paris, I am sure to take tips from you. Seems like this store is a wholesale one. Parisian pharmacies are quite different from the pharmacies in the United States. Parisian pharmacies sell medicine and self care products. While in the United States, the pharmacies kind of look like little grocery stores. You can buy medicine, but you also can buy some cokes, snacks and a magazine as well. In the United States, there are pharmacy chains, such as CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens and Walmart. Parisian pharmacies are privately owned. In Paris, there are no pharmacy chains.
